Joachim Badenhorst

Clarinet & Sax Player / Composer / improviser

Joachim Badenhorst is a Belgian saxophonist and clarinetist (specializing in bass clarinet and tenor saxophone), born in Antwerp in 1981, and a major figure in the creative and improvised music scene. Educated at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, he blends contemporary jazz, free improvisation, and new chamber music.

He leads several innovative projects, most notably the larger ensemble Carate Urio Orchestra and the Icelandic folk-inspired quintet Mógil. Badenhorst’s work is characterized by his exploration of timbre and his willingness to integrate music with other artistic disciplines like theatre and dance. He has collaborated extensively with improvisers such as Han Bennink and runs his own independent record label, KLEIN.
