The Concept: Rocks in Motion
The project is inspired by Racetrack Playa, a dry lake in Death Valley, California, where boulders move imperceptibly across the surface. Reflecting this phenomenon, artist Stephane Thidet created a work involving seven stones carving long trails into clay.
Artistic Vision
“Racetrack Playa is a dry lake in Death Valley where rocks move imperceptibly across the surface, leaving trails behind—an action likely explained by the cyclical freezing and thawing of the ground. In echo of this phenomenon, linking sculpture and drawing, Stephane Thidet imagined seven stones all heading north, leaving behind long furrows carved into the clay.

On June 17, 2017, I performed with ‘Un peu plus loin,’ a work from the ‘Desert’ triptych created by Stephane Thidet at the Maubuisson Abbey. I later returned alone to improvise amidst the suspended and mysterious presence of the rocks and their traces. Eleven minutes were extracted and sent to four inventive electroacoustic musicians, each of whom created a variation from this base. The result is an intimate connection with the spirit of the work, an interstellar conversation, a setting in motion.”
