Magic Malik

Born in 1969 in Abidjan (CI) — Flutist, Composer, and Researcher

Magic Malik is an essential and unclassifiable figure on the international music scene. A virtuoso flutist with a unique sonic signature—instantly recognizable by his "overblowing" technique—he navigates with total freedom between jazz, contemporary pop, and experimental research.

A visionary composer and rhythm theorist, he constantly pushes the boundaries of his instrument. His approach, both mystical and mathematical, makes him a sonic explorer whose influence deeply marks today's musical creation.

Origins and Background

Of Ivorian origin and raised in Guadeloupe, Malik Mezzadri began playing the flute at the age of six. His classical training at the Marseille Conservatory did not prevent him from diving into improvisation at an early age. In the 90s, he moved to Paris and quickly became a pillar of the jazz and electro-jazz scene (notably with the Saint-Germain project).

The Magic Malik Orchestra and Steve Coleman's Influence

With the Magic Malik Orchestra, he defined a new sound, blending urban groove and complex structures. His meeting with saxophonist Steve Coleman was a turning point: it strengthened his fascination with rhythmic cycles and mathematical composition systems, which he develops through his own theories (the "XP" or thought experiments).

Research and Spirituality

For Malik, music is inseparable from a spiritual quest and scientific rigor. His research on "rhythmic signatures" and numerical proportions echoes the work of Toma Gouband and Harmen Fraanje. This natural connection led him to collaborate closely with the Astropi Music label, participating in emblematic projects such as Nyamaropa or 1RDR.

A Creator Without Borders

Malik does not let himself be confined by any style. He can be found alongside hip-hop figures (Hocus Pocus), singers (Camille, Juliette), as well as in contemporary music ensembles or exploratory projects of African inspiration. His melodic talent and stage energy make him a rare artist, capable of captivating jazz purists and the general public alike.

Collaborations

He has shared the stage and studio with: Steve Coleman, Saint-Germain, Laurent de Wilde, Bojan Z, Aka Moon, Bumcello, Camille, Hocus Pocus, Brice Soniano, Toma Gouband, Harmen Fraanje, Nelson Veras, Meshell Ndegeocello, and many others.
