Magic Malik, real name Malik Mezzadri, is a highly respected French jazz flautist, composer, and singer, born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, in 1969 and raised in Guadeloupe. He received a classical education, earning a first prize in flute from the Marseille Conservatory, but soon turned his focus to jazz and improvised music.
His sound is instantly recognizable due to his exceptional technique and his use of the “growl”—a mix of singing, shouting, and vocal effects played through the flute—an expressive style reminiscent of Roland Kirk. He founded the influential Magic Malik Orchestra and the Fanfare XP, and is known for blending jazz with diverse influences including reggae, electro, pop, and Afrobeat (a style he sometimes calls “ka-frobeat”).
Magic Malik has been a prolific collaborator, recording with a wide range of artists, including jazz figures like Steve Coleman and French and international stars such as Camille, Laurent Garnier, -M-, and Oumou Sangaré.
